If we think of ourselves as having a portfolio of interests then maybe 80-90% of them will be dabbles but that should only be 10-20% of our time spent.

Yes, pragmatism should be applied here. I think the key is to not kid ourselves that we are seriously pursuing an interest when we are in fact dabbling (or hacking, or obsessing) as per the other archetypes George Leonard describes. Having tried to reflect on my own pursuits I think may have deluded myself that I'm taking the mastery approach, when in fact I've been dabbling or hacking - and that's all without judgement of course, all part of self-awareness.
